If you haven’t heard about this fast moving virus with no cure, sweeping through areas of China and now many other countries, then you need to start paying attention to the news.
This is very disturbing stuff. Could it be the next global pandemic? Very possibly.
I am currently watching a Netflix limited series called PANDEMIC. It is a behind the scenes look at SARS, MERS, EBOLA and the like. It is about the brave people working behind the scenes to help people ill with these deadly viruses. It is also a great documentary series about the young people who are working very hard to develop a vaccine to cover 8 different strains of these viruses in one vaccine.
The World Health Organization has just declared the coronavirus a global emergency. When cities of 11 million residents are shut down and in “house arrest” we have to acknowledge that this is a very serious situation.
Flights to and from China have been halted by the USA and Australia as I type this post. Cruise ships are being quarantined in Japan and Italy. I’m sure by the time you read this post a few days from now, more countries will be onboard with this drastic, but much needed measure of protecting their populations from this virus. This halt in international business can certainly affect the economics of the world too.
Canada is currently in communication with China to get the Canadian’s there back home on Canadian soil. They will have to be contained for 14 days when they get home to make sure none of them are affected.
If other countries in Asia don’t halt flights and try for containment of this virus then it will be out of control world wide. It will then be endemic and possibly affect 5 to 10% of the world population. If containment does not work in China and their numbers keep climbing, rather than leveling off, then we can pretty well expect it to become a global mess.
I know the scientists working on the “one size fits all flues” vaccine are a long way out from having their product ready for public use. The docu-series shows them just finishing the “live pig” trials. The next step is the human trials. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has sponsored the trials going forward. I don’t think this will be done in time to help with the Coronavirus….but here’s hoping it is ready sooner…. rather than later.
The experts say there is no need for us to be worried about the coronavirus right now, but it is a good idea to have it in your conscious mind. Wash your hands as often as you can. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, mouth and ears. This is the way it is going to be spread. Apparently it is human to human contagious through bodily fluids. It can survive on any surface so you could pick it up off of any surface.
I was out in a public place the other day and chose to wear a mask. Why not? I was protected from the regular cold and flu virus as well. I also have hand sanitizer with me in my purse. Be aware and prepare…it’s a fast moving story, changing from news broadcast to news broadcast. It’s a case of “the more you know……”
Symptoms of this virus are similar to the common cold. For example: fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell, fever, cough and respiratory congestion, runny nose, sore throat, sinus pressure, chills, dehydration, possible pneumonia. Your immune system will fight this virus as it would with other cold/flu viruses.
