Matcha Green Tea

This post about Matcha Green Tea was posted by me back in November of 2011.  I have decided to post it again because I am now adding this amazing powerful powder to my smoothies every morning.  I can honestly say that it energizes me.  I know this.  I feel it and I like it.  So I thought it would be a good idea to repost this and reacquaint you and me about the wonderful benefits of Matcha Green Tea powder.

I have been consuming green tea for a very long time….say 15 years.  I have tried so many different kinds, mostly organic and mostly in the form of a tea bag that you steep in boiling water.  I was introduced to the best tea you can drink and I want to share that with you.

MATCHA GREEN TEA POWDER

The health benefits of matcha tea surpass green tea by a long shot.  This is because when you are consuming matcha you are drinking in the whole leaf.  One cup of matcha is equivalent to 10 cups of green tea in nutritional value.  Matcha tea cannot be beat.

When we drink brewed green tea we are only drinking the water with the extraction from the tea leaves.  When you drink Matcha you are drinking the green powder in the water and getting the whole leaf fully loaded with all of the valuable antioxidants and minerals.  Matcha tea is a powder made from stonegrounding the leaves.  It is not packaged in a tea bag and you do not need to use special loose tea leaf equipment.  When you drink a cup of green matcha tea you are getting a powerful blast of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids that you will not receive from the usual cup of green tea.    You would need to drink about 10 cups of the usual green tea to get the same potency received in a single cup of matcha.

Matcha is loaded with antioxidants unparalleled when put up against vegetables and fruits.    Researchers at Tufts University discovered that matcha has twenty times more antioxidant power than pomegranates or blueberries.  When using the “ORAC” (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) rating Matcha comes in at 1300 units per gram where blueberries come in at 91 and pomegranates come in at 105.   That is an absolutely incredible difference.

Years and years ago Matcha was used by monks to help them remain calm during meditation.  That is because matcha is rich in L-Theanine which is a rare amino acid that promotes a state of relaxed alertness.  L-Theanine is present in all teas but the amounts in matcha are 5 times greater.

Matcha contains catechins not found in other foods.  Catechins are potent antioxidants that contribute to the fight against cancer in your body.  These catechins go after free radicals in your system such as pollution.

One obvious bonus I find after a cup of matcha tea is my energy level increases.  This is caused by all of the wonderful natural properties in this elixer tea.

When I first started to drink Matcha tea I was not quite sure it was going to sit well with me.   The water turns a vibrant green colour and it shocked me.  But the more I drank it the more I knew it was a good fit.   You only need a 1/4 teaspoon of powder in about 2 ounces of hot water.    I make a full cup of tea with about a 1/2 teaspoon of the lovely green powder.

A couple of side notes on the benefits of matcha….it boosts metabolism and it helps to detox your body of chemicals and heavy metals.  That is because it is much higher in chlorophyll than other green teas.  You can also use the powder to add benefits to some recipes such as “raw peppermint patties”.  The matcha powder turns the center of these treats green and adds all the benfits to your chocolate treat.  How wonderful is that.
