My advice to you would be to try and avoid it at all cost.
What is it…you ask? It is highly refined liquid sweetener derived from fructose and glucose from corn. It is cheap, most likely made with genetically modified corn. It has a long shelf life so is added to every processed food and sugary beverage out there. You will find it in soda pop, sweetened ice teas, fruit juices, Kool-aid, cookies, ice cream, soup, spaghetti sauces, mayonaisse products, crackers, ketchup, salad dressings, some yogurts, barbecue sauces and other “ready made” sauces, jams, cereals, refined bread, soft drinks and diet foods. The list is endless. RESTAURANT FOODS ARE LOADED WITH IT.
High fructose corn syrup was introduced to the world in 1980 and since it’s addition to foods, obesity is skyrocketing. The big problem with HFCS is that it goes straight to your liver which turns the liquid into fat and usually fat right around your mid-section. It bypasses the pancreas so there is no insulin secretion. When you eat a piece of fruit you are getting fructose but the fiber in the fruit helps to slow down the absorbtion of the fructose. When you are eating HFCS your brain doesn’t get the “I’m full” signal. You are always hungry and always craving sweet processed foods. You are not being nourished by the highly refined, processed foods you find yourself reaching for and are most likely addicted to.
HFCS is linked to diabetes and obesity, heart disease and even cancer. It is dangerous. By avoiding it you will help your waistline, your mood and overall health.
Learn to read labels on your favorite products. You will be astounded at how many products have this “silent killer” in them. It will be listed on labels as High Fructose Corn Syrup or Modified Corn Starch.
People ages 40 and under have been raised on high fructose corn syrup. It is a cheap replacement for sugar in processing. A very high number of people in these age groups are battling diabetes and obesity. Did you know that North Americans are the fattest people on the planet. The average weight of a women is 164 pounds and an average man is now 191 pounds. These numbers are 25 pounds higher than in 1960. Is that not unbelieveable? Actually it is believeable when you see the junk in the average grocery cart. It is insanity.
HFCS may be cheap in the processing of foods but it is costing billions in the health care sector with increased cases of diabetes, cancer and heart disease, and obesity.
Some finger pointing will lead you to Pepsi and Coca-Cola who are big users and Archer Daniel Midland, the largest producer of HFCS.
NOTE: HFCS shortens a lab mouse from a normal 2 year life span to a mere 5 week life span. Is that not incredible . It affects humans in detrimental ways too.
We need to wake up to this reality. Kick the habit. Get off the processed foods. Next time you go to the grocery store, try to shop in the outside aisles only. The inner aisles are pretty much processed foods, excluding the dry beans, grains and the like. Try eating more fresh, whole, home prepared meals. It may take a bit more time to prepare but is well worth it if you care about your health and your waistline.
THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE. Vote against the use of HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP every time you grocery shop. Buy foods that don’t contain it. Feed your family foods you can feel good about. Switch to natural, fresh produce, grains, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes. Foods that nourish….not make you sick.
To your health.
