Regular Exercise

The human body was built to move. Not just day to day movement. The body requires physical exercise to stay strong in many ways. The muscles need to be challenged to the point of fatigue repeatedly to strengthen them and keep them strong. Treating all of the major muscle groups and the smaller less obvious muscles is very important to overall health.

When you exercise you are increasing oxygen in the body, stimulating the lymphatic system, cleansing through perspiration and strengthening all of the major organs.

Regular exercise increases mood, self-esteem, energy, sleep quality, metabolism, digestion, breathing, coordination, balance etc. The benefits are too many to list here.

You should incorporate aerobic, resistance and stretching into your exercise routine. The aerobics can be simply walking 30 minutes a day or you can do a more intense form of aerobics such as running, stair climbing, riding a bike, swimming lengths in a pool etc. Resistance would be weight training. Stretching could be a form of yoga or Chinese type of discipline such as Qigong or Tai Chi. You should schedule your exercise time on your calendar just as you would an appointment. If it is on your calendar then you will make the time to do it. A good program would be to work out 4 to 5 days a week and each session should be at least 45 minutes. Remember, you don’t have to work out until you are in a lather or in pain. Any consistant exertion every day is a good thing.

If you are just starting out on an exercise program remember to start with baby steps. Gradually intensify your work outs as you gain strength. Some people may want to join a community fitness center or gym. You may want to hire a personal trainer to help you get started as they can certainly add so much to your work out. They can teach you proper movements with weights, stretching that is important to your muscles, develop a program for you suited to your fitness level, age, current health and previous fitness history. Eventually you will be comfortable working out on your own and then you can schedule upgrading sessions with the trainer as you need them. There are also great group classes that you can join at a fitness center. The options are plentiful.

Just get up off that couch and get moving. You will be glad you did.
